I've always wondered. When credit cards apps come saying they are pre approved...are they really?

It's an invented term by their marketing department. I get pre-approved credit card applications for my cat. I use her name on magazine subscriptions, as I've been burned by offers for free subscriptions yet get a bill demanding payment a few months later.

preapproved basically means you fill some criteria that they set for their credit cards. Certian FICO score or credit history. Sometimes you can get rejected beacuse on deeper looking of yoru credit you got a few bad things.. and then they deny you.

Yes. Depending on the company, your name was filtered and met through certain criteria that fit X marketing strategy and thus made it to qualify for PA selection.

You'd be amazed how nothing is sacred anymore. Marketers buy thousands of records from the credit bureaus for raw databases to market their financing to.

The fine print always says that upon further review they can rescind the pre-approval.
