I keep getting letters in the mail telling me I'm preapproved for eleventy billion different credit cards, and I always toss them because I can't apply for a credit card. But doesn't being preapproved mean that you can get the card, all you need to do is ask for it? Or is it just marketing babble?

I've got this Capital One spam in my hand saying I can get their card, I'm going to go to their site and see if it works :p

I would apply, see if you get approved and then buy lots of stuff

I don't think you're responsible for paying it back since you're not 18. Anyone know for sure?

I got my first over the phone CC offer when I was 14. The guy was real pushy until I told him my age. At which point he hung up fast. In retrospect, I should've taken it, stuck it in a drawer, and started building up my credit early. I didn't get a CC of my own for another 5 years. :)

Fail.

"Date of Birth invalid. You must be 18 years or older to apply."

Doesn't even try to process the application either, just won't let you move past the first page.

You're not really preapproved anyway. You're pre-preapproved. In most cases you still have to provide them with job and income verification and they retain the right to kick you out if that isn't up to their standards.

If you read all the fine print very few CC offers are one's where you were truly pre-approved to get the card, most have wording like 'pre-approved to apply'.

Yup. It's synonymous with "We're gonna keep sending you crap."

No, the language is correct as it is. You are pre-approved. That means, they send you that letter BEFORE you are approved. "Pre" doesn't mean after. It isn't an after-approved letter. It is a letter they send you before you are approved.

I read something about that in a law class... forget the details, but I know there is something about it. My teacher explained that because of this, if someone under 18 years old went to return an item, it had to be taken back. Again, don't remember the details, or the situation, but that there is something. If someone else can actually clarify, that would be appreciated ;)

You'd have to cosign in order to even be considered for a card when not 18 or older. Plus, even at 18+ you're likely to be given a secured credit card.

Haha, tricky. As in, you are "before the approved status" for this credit card, send in your info and well consider giving it to you.

On another note, I asked AMEX to raise my limit to 50K and within 10 seconds they approved.

Those "pre approved" items used to mean "we've already approved you to have this card, if you'd like it, fill out this stuff and you'll get one". Now it means "you've been approved to apply for this card, just like any other being on the planet". The "approval" doesn't mean didley anymore, a simple play on words.

On a side note, I've opted out of receiving all these 'pre-approved' offers, I'm afraid one of those letters is going to get into someone else's hands who will use it to open an account in my name......
