An xbox can die from DVD drive and hard drive failures, and the repair cost is about the same as buying a new one. So you're probably better off buying a new one with a full warranty. Especially if you can buy with a platinum credit card that doubles the manufacturer warranty.

My friend recently had a problem with his old XBox so he bought a seemingly "refurbished" pre-played XBox from EBGames. I used to work at Gamestop and the most we ever did was test it, clean up the outside a little and shrinkwrap it. The problem with buying these pre-played XBoxes is that some of them come with Thompson brand DVD drives which have been known to fail because they suck. If you buy a new XBox, you're more likely to end up with a Samsung or Philips brand DVD drive which is much better than the Thompson drives of old. My friend ended up with a Thompson after buying pre-played and exchanged it for a Microsoft Refurb.
