I have a 160GB HD which is going to be the system disk of a computer which hasn't been bought yet, and now i'd like to put some data on it from my old computer.
My question is, can i pre format it with my old pc and then install xp to it no problem? I have been planning to do a 40GB partition for the OS, and putting the data on the other partition. I got curious when it asked to assign a letter to the volume. Will it be permanent?
I really dont want to install my xp to the I: drive.

You can partition it however you want, then choose which partition to install WinXP on during the install process. If you install Windows on a partition that's not the first one on the disk, I'm not sure if it will call that partition "C:" or not.

Of course, you can also format/partition the disk when you install WinXP, then copy over the data.

You can always change the drive letters using Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer management > Storage - Disk management.
