http://www.engadget.com/2014/10/30/london-police-gang-violence-study/

London's Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has completed a 20-week study in a bid to more accurately predict whether specific gang members are likely to commit violence. The software, developed by Accenture, pulls data together from systems already used by the MPS and runs it through an analytics engine. It's looking at geography, past offenses, associations with other criminal and even social media postings. An MPS spokesman told the BBC that the system would record and analyze threats or negative comments made by gang members on social media, for example.

Prior to launching the pilot, police analyzed data on London gangs in 32 boroughs for a period of four years to see who was most likely to commit mayhem. That study was then compared to actual acts of violence recorded in its crime logs. The MPS said the experiment accurately pinpointed future villains, though it wouldn't divulge which criteria it used for its predictions.

Didn't we just see this in Captain America 2? :hmm:

This sounds pretty much like "the machine" from "person of interest". It makes sense to use the data you have available to figure out where the problems are going to be, but knowing authoritarians in government love this kind of stuff, they'd certainly take it to far and abuse it.

police analyzed data on London gangs

Gangs.

Not law abiding citizens with no previous criminal,.. or little criminal record - but, gangs. This is about a known criminal element and trying to anticipate it. Possibly even deter it from even happening,.. by, I dunno, having more cops patrol the area they suspect something will happen??

Yeah, it's called profiling, except you usually end up rounding up a disproportionate amount of minorities and then we know what happens next.

Having more cops requires more arrests in order to justify the numbers and this is what happens next when you run out of crime but still want to keep the same number of cops.

But 10 months into Bratton's tenure as top cop, a new report claims that quotas -- which are illegal under New York state law -- remain alive and well in the NYPD.

"Though police brass well deny it, here's how the quota system works and does harm: Precinct Captains or Lieutenants, under pressure from police headquarters, direct officers to meet specific goals regarding arrests and summonses and deploy the officers in particular neighborhoods," said Robert Gangi, director of the Police Reform Organizing Project, in an emailed press statement. On Tuesday, Gangi's group released a report calling on Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio to put an end to the quota system.

"Everyone in those communities becomes a potential criminal even if their criminality is fabricated by officers to meet monthly 'productivity' goals," Gangi continued.
