pppd dies with kernel 2.4.16 (but works fine with 2.2.16)

I'm using Debian Linux 2.2r3, and can't get my modem working quite right. I use wvdial to connect, and it works perfectly fine in kernel 2.2.16, but when I try to use it with kernel 2.4.16 pppd dies. /var/log/messages mentions something about 'tcsetattr', and I know that I have PPP and async ports (it's an external serial modem) compiled into my kernel. Anyone have any ideas, or need more info, please reply. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
