is there any chart / table that would show acceptable ppi for screen sizes?

ppi matters at how far away from the screen you will be looking

so
72 ppi on that 60" TV is great
but
72 ppi on your laptop not so good
and
72 ppi on your mobile would be terrible ..

so I am shopping for a laptop ..

and am curious to see what are needed ppi for screen sizes ..

like now i see a

1366x768 @ 15.6 = 100ppi
and
1600 x 900 @ 13.3 = 138ppi

but note the screen sizes .. and distance one might be away

ALSO MORE importantly I am curious as to what is best for our eyes?

I am thinking that a LARGER screen .. is easier ? less strain ?

this is based on my recent work on my hand helds - was working much on my 5.7" on Note 3 ... had eye strain .. now that I am on 8" Tab S2.. AND I wish I would have gotten the 10" S2 .. would have been better?

what do you think?
any good solid info / articles on this?

thank you ..

Needed is the wrong word. In general, things will be clearer at higher PPI. Since all modern Operating Systems have scaling, you should be able to pick and choose how big or small you want the text based on that.

In older programs which weren't programmed with scaling in mind, there might be problems with the UI looking proper when scaled higher (say 200%). That's application specific, however, so you'd have to do the research on whatever critical applications you use.

What's "needed" for you will be based on your vision, taste, and wallet.

>As Steve Jobs said: "It turns out there’s a magic number right around 300 pixels per inch, that when you hold something around to 10 to 12 inches away from your eyes, is the limit of the human retina to differentiate the pixels." Given a large enough viewing distance, all displays eventually become "retina."

consider my example both become retna at about 25 ~ 29 inches

but one is 14" another is 11.6"

viewable area difference ..

idea is to have close to real life scenario as possible to have largers canvas at retna

not 11.6 but say 27" will be much easier on the eyes

So, if my viewing distance is so far back that I cannot see the individual pixels then I am in Retina heaven? Let me put my 50" 1080P plasma at one end of the house and I'll view it from 60' away. I will be in Retina heaven, right? <rolls eyes>

Eyestrain from pixel size? No way. Bring your font size up if you get a headache. If dpi gave eyestrain inkjets and laser printers would have been an issue long ago.
