PPGA vs FCPGA vs "socket 370" heatsinks...differences?

Can someone quickly detail to me the differences
between PPGA, FCPGA and "socket 370" heatsinks?
I have seen old heatsinks sold as "PPGA, also
works for FCPGA chips". But my observation is that
older heatsinks don't have a small lip at one end,
which results in them not lying flat agains the smaller
FCPGA chips when attached.

Is this basically irrelevant (although it appears not
to lie flat, it is actually making sufficient contact),
or are the heatsinks with a lip REQUIRED for FCPGA
chips (in which case these old heatsink descriptions
are bunk in attempt to sell old-stock to unsuspecting
customers)?

Thanks,

Kwad

Yeah, I pretty much got that...But what about
PPGA/socket 370 == FCPGA. Doesn't look that way to me...

The big question (and it's the big question 'cause I can buy
PPGA/socket 370 heatsinks cheap) is whether these heatsinks
can reliably be used for FCPGA chips...It doesn't seem they
seat properly on the chip, but maybe it's still OK...I guess...

That's the question...

Fans...Probably. My question had to do with heatsinks...

Anyone...Save me before I make a mistake and buy some cheap
(but potentially incompatible) PPGA heatsinks for use with
FCPGA chips...

lol...well depending on where you get it just read the label...hahaha...but all in all...you should be set with either a ppga or a fcpga heat sink...

The FCPGA package has a smaller surface area and thinner slug for the heatsink to push against compared to the PPGA package. Also, the clip has the put the pressure in the center so the heatsink isn't tilted and lays flat against the chip.

Well, I tried an old HSF that I had used for a Celeron PPGA on my P3700 and it looked OK at first but when I fired up the machine, it failed to boot because it got so hot very quickly. Upon closer inspection, the HSF was definitely not completely flush on the processor and could not be manipulated so that it was. Just one experience...
