Thank you Bozo Galora for an excellent PSU tutorial!

I found out from your posting that the problems my PC has is symptomatic of an insufficient psu.

Great job!

Wow! That's a lot of information on power supplies but I like it. Anyways, my friends P933 just fried and since I had a spare XP1800+ processor laying around I just let him borrow it. I won it at the AMD XPP giveaways so I let him use the GA-7DX motherboard too. I happened to have ddr ram lying around. How lucky is he! Anyways I was concerned that the system wouldn't be able to supply enough power to the Athlon XP processor. I opened up the case, and found out he had a Deer 250W PSU. I decided I'd give the PSU a chance and it seems to work. So maybe wattage is overhyped. I don't know... what do you guys think?

Wattage is overhyped but it can be useful, especially if you are running alot of stuff in your case.
My understanding is that you need these specs to run an AMD xp:

+5V current should quote 35 to 45 amps (45A)
+12v current should quote 18 amps or more (18A)
+3.3V current should quote 28 amps or more (28A)

I found this at a site that I linked above.

Of course, if the power supply meets the minimum requirements then the chip will run fine, but you may not be able to overclock, if that is what you want to do.

I would recommend the Enhance ENP-0730. Newegg has it for $29 + $10 s/h. It has a TCO of 220W. I think it is a much better deal then this PowMan. I am using it with my XP 1700 and it works great. One of my friends just built a new system using an ABIT KR7A board and XP 1600 processor. He used this crappy 300W power supply. It is a ValueLine brand and it has a TCO of only 100W but his system is rock solid. I was amazed that his computer even booted up with that crappy power supply and I was even more amazed he was able to install Windows. He has been playing CS and doing other stuff with it for a couple days now and seems to have no problems. I don't know what's going on but oh well.

Power schmower flower supply! I'm buying a 100W PS and hooking it up to my dual XP2000+ processors!! and it's gonna be rock solid! hehe j/k . anyways aren't powerr supplies over rated in general?

As long as we are talking power supplies here....does anyone know what the difference is between the Enhance 300W model and their 350W model?? It seems to me that they have exactly the same ratings for all rails. See here. How does one of them have 50W more total power? 😕

I got another question. Is Total combined load on a 3.3 & 5 the same as the TCO for those rails or is it something totally different?

Mine is up and running.

I was running a Sparkle 350w and my system would hardly ever boot on the first couple tries. With this one, it boots right up. I haven't tested the rails, but so far I'm happy.

It seems the TCO of 180watt specs might not be real and that it's TCO IS really 250watts. I wish there was a real way to confirm it so this thread's getting a . . .

*bump bump* get up there!! 😀

I agree, it maybe even true...

Ok guys...I saw a great deal on a Future Power case and bought it cuz ..well it said AMD approved and it had a 400 watt power supply. I plug it in a kept hearing funny little noises. were driving me crazy..unplugged the fans...still there. So I borrowed my daughters stethescope and listened around the case and then the Power supply. Then I heard it . It was coming from the power supply.
Was a little voice ...........saying....you cheap f__k you should a bought an Enermax!!!!!!
