some of you ol' school folk might remember them

to save any suspense, it looks like its only going to be on motherboards:

Intel called Poulsbo chipset as a System Controller Hub (SCH) that basically combines the MCH and ICH into a single chip. VR-Zone learned that there will be 3 SKUs; US11L supporting 400FSB Silverthorne, 512MB DDR2, 100MHz graphics core clock, SD Video only and up to 800x480 resolution, US15L supporting 400FSB Silverthorne, 1GB DDR2, 200MHz graphics core clock HD Video Decode and up to 1366x768 resolution and US15W that has similar features set as US15L but supporting 533FSB Silverthorne. The 3D graphics core is powered by PowerVR SGX Series5 instead of Intel integrated graphics cores like GMA 3000, X3100 etc.

They never left the game. They've been involved in video processors for mobile devices for ages; the iPhone for example uses a PowerVR chip.

My last card that used them was a Matrox M3D. :Q

How many of you remember those? Pretty neat in its time.

In either case this isn't a return to them producing desktop GPUs. Intel is using a mobile device GPU since Atom is after all a processor for mobile devices.

It's a shame that PowerVR are not releasing something much more powerful to give Nvidia and ATI a run for their money.

I loved my 64mb Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 Kyro2, it ran all of my games very well, those were the days! :)

Haha, I had one. Was a cheaper alternative to the Voodoo at the time, plus did all the work through the PCI bus so it didn't need an external dongle. Freekin' huge box, for such a little bit of PCB.

I also had a Millenium G200. For a couple weeks it was actually the best 3D accelerator on the market.

Mine came with a race game called Ultim@te Race Pro and was my first real PC race car game that was 3D accelerated. Things were never the same afterward.

I was really disappointed to find that the PowerVR Kyro 2 SE was not much faster than a regular Kyro 2. PowerVR introduced Enhanced T@L but this didn't give any performance increase and was really just Software T@L with a fancy name. :(

Found a REVIEW (probably the last ever) of the Hercules 4500 Kyro2 from 2004 featuring such modern? games as Unreal 2, UT2003 and X2 the Threat etc. It also has information and benchmarks of Enhanced T@L.
