Hi all.

About a month ago, a powersurge fried my 2 year old PC. I had
Gigabyte DQ6 Motherboard
4gb Patriot Ram
evga 9800gx2
A couple of (dvd/hard) drives
1000w Corsair PSU

I've rebuilt everything except the hard drives which are still good.
I got a great price on

EVGA P55 FTW SLI 132-LF-E657-KR LGA1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
6gb Patriot Ram
i5 661 processor (I know, but it was a real good deal)
XFX 750 PSU
I need a new GFX card that is equivilent or better than the 9800gx2.

In looking through the threads, it looks like my only option in the >$250 price point is the insanely hot gfx260/275 family or the ati 5770/5830.

So my question is this.
Considering my re-built system. Considering that I don't game much anymore, but the games I do play are more strategy games (supreme commander2/Total War series) and in the future, SC2/Diablo3..
Also considering that my monitors native resolution is 1900x1200 - what would you all suggest?

4890 performs slightly better than 5770 (about $20 more) for much cheaper than 5830 @ under $200

I decided to save some $ dropped from choosing a 5850 to 4890.

If 512 MB of DDR5 is enough, frys.com has a Galaxy GT 240 card for $59.99 after $30 mail-in rebate. If you live near a Fry's B&M, it's $25 less ($34.99).

If the 240 is good enough for you, and you want a card with 1 GB of RAM, Newegg has the same card with 1 GB of DDR5 for $54.99 after a $20 rebate, plus $6.98 shipping.

Hope that helps. :)
he said he needs a new card that is equivalent or better than the 9800gx2. a gt240 isnt even half as good.

OP, I am not sure why you think the gtx260 cards are hot because they are actually really quiet and cool for that level of performance. in most games my overclocked gtx260 doesnt even go much above 70C and a 55nm version would probably be even cooler.

4890 would be about equivalent to your old card, 5850 should be faster, 5770 will be slower. The 4890 is in short supply, buy you can get one here for $198 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150438

The 9800GX2 was faster than a GTX280 when not memory limited: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2556/13. A 4890 is pretty close in performance to a GTX280, and will be a more consistent performer than the 9800GX2. Unfortunately, your card was pretty powerful, so replacing it with something equal or better will cost some money.

He also said he doen't game much, anymore so it depends on what he really needs for what he really does.

I'd just found the deals for the $35 512 MB card and the 1 GB card so I thought I'd toss it out for consideration. With the gear he has, he sounds like he's experienced and smart enough to figure it out. :)

I think first you need to figure out how much warranty is worth to you.
I personally always buy new or at the very least factory refurb with some warranty support. I might consider used from XFX or other company if the seller can guarantee it's been registered for support.
New for less than 250 you have 5770 and 5830. Unfortunately nothing good from NV yet as 465 is $280. Since a 9800GX2 is basically 9800GT in SLI, I'd estimate it's faster than a 5770 in some cases and slower in others (especially when the VRAM becomes an issue) so I'd say they are probably about the same with 5770 being more consistent. GTS 250 = overclocked 9800 GT so I think it will be a little slower than the GX2 except when VRAM became an issue.

If you are going used why not get a 4870x2 or 4850x2? Those will actually be faster than the 9800GX2 and can be had for under 150.

I don't think a 5770 is ever going to be faster than a 9800gx2, unless nVidia has stopped supporting the 9800gx2 in the drivers. But the GTS250 idea is interesting. Why not buy one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127478

and then decide if it's not fast enough. You can always SLI another for guaranteed > 9800gx2 performance. With your motherboard, you could also try doing the same thing with the ATI equivalent (the 5750): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131354.
