Hey guys, these forums are great, full of very knowledgeable people. I am building a new computer and I am trying to pick some of the best parts that I can with my budget range. With my previous builds I've never really too into account buying a good PSU but after having many problems I decided that I better investigate it more. I have done some research but I am at a lose on which PSU to get and I was hoping someone might have a recommendation.

I would like to keep the price around $100. Here is what my build is going to have in it:

  • ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (I havent bought my CPU yet but Ill probably get a faster one)
MSI Geforce 7800GTX 256MB PCI Express (I would like to go SLI also)
Kingston HyperX 2GB (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel
CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS GAMER
    Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB
    Western Digital SATA 200GB
ZALMAN 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan

With this hardware what would be a good PSU to look into? Is there anything wrong with this build that you guys would change that wouldnt drastically increase the price? Thanks for all the help.

Well..you will certainly get a different opinion from almost anybody that responds to this...seems everybody has a favorite brand. Having said that though..you should buy a brand that has a proven track record based upon the needs you have outlined. If you go with SLI now or in the future you will need some extra kick. Antec and Enermax are my favorite choices when quality and power are both needed. Check out these 2...aslo pay attention to weather or not you have a 24 pin or 20 power connector on your mobo.

I like this one ..a plus is the Dual 12 volt rail!!

This one also is good...it also has a dual 12 vlt rail.

Good luck.

It depends if rock-solid reputation is most important to you or features. I personally wanted a PSU that supported SLI (and by that, I mean it had TWO PCI-e connectors - many don't) as well four SATA power connectors. I also wanted one with modular cabling. Hence, I went with the Thermaltake Truepower 500W. I don't think Thermaltake is regarded as having a rock-solid reputation in PSU's but I'm fairly confident it's not junk either.

The watts viewer is a gimick but the fan controller and case exhaust fan are a nice bonus.

http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/w005758twv500/w005758twv500.htm

It sells for $115 at Newegg.

Thermaltake also offers an advance shipment replacement if you have any issues.

When you guys talk about supporting SLI that means they have two 12v connectors correct?

No, they have at LEAST 500W and two PCI-Express connectors. Dual 12V rails is always a plus, but not necessary.

i spent a good amount of time looking at power supplies and ended up ordering the NeoPower two days ago from ZipZoomFly for $99 with free 2nd day shipping. i haven't got it yet because i'm in Hawaii but i should get it within the next 24 hours. it has dual rails, active PFC, modular (removable) cables, and enough wattage to power pretty much anything you throw at it. plus it has great reviews.

This one should be perfect - FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX500-A ATX12V 500W Power Supply 115/230 V - Retail

$98 shipped.

That is the exact PSU I recommended, but it is cheaper at actbuy and ewiz.
