Powersupply question.

Hi. Right now I'm building a computer, but I don't have all the parts yet. However, I would like to test some fans and lightning right away. I was wondering if it would be ok to turn on a power supply unit only to use one or two molex, without a motherboard or anything else, or if it could cause a disaster or something like that. Thanks.

Modern powersupplies that are of decent quality will have protection against underloads so it would be fine. The problem is that there's no easy way to turn it on. ATX powersupplies are turned on by the motherboard.

There are ways to start it up, but you're going to have to do some shorting out and stuff.

It would probably just be easier to try out the stuff on a working computer.

Of course, you can turn it on mnanually but you have to know what you're doing. What you need to turn it on , and make sure you have the fans and lights connected already, is to short the green wire with any of the black wire on the mobo power connector.
