PowerShot A570 IS performance vs slim camera

I have a Canon PowerShot A570 IS right now that I use when I need to take pictures. I'm going to India(Bangalore) in a week for a month for work. I'd like to carry a camera with me all the time to take pictures but my camera is a bit thick and it may be a pain to keep in the pocket all the time. But if the pictures from this camera will be a lot better than a slim camera I'll keep using it and just deal with it.

I take all my pictures on automatic because I don't know any better!
 
you won't be able to tell the difference, but i recommend if you do get a camera that could hide in a cigarette pack you keep IS.

And to learn to not suck at taking pictures do you recommend picking up a book or finding a tutorial online?
