I understand it's an all around nice camera but what's bothering me is that it's running on 4 double a batteries. How long do these last on average? Does the LCD drain them really fast?

From what I've experienced with the camera it hasn't been much of a problem. I had it for a week or so before I got rechargeables and it ate through normal alkaline batteries pretty quickly, but then almost all digital cameras do. With 1600-1800 mAh batteries I can use the camera for quite a bit before the batteries go dead. I know 'quite a bit' probably doesn't help that much, but I've never done any quantitative testing. I also use it with the LCD on exclusively.

No worries, AA's are cheap, so buy several sets and keep clicking! With AA's if something happens when you're out you can go anywhere and get more in a hurry. My D60 uses $50 BP-511's that I would have trouble finding in stock even in a pretty good camera store. One thing Canon is pretty good at is battery life. This is in general, I've never used an A40.

It uses NiMH rechargeable batteries quite nicely.

Instead of depleting your wallet and filling our landfills with used alkaline batteries buy one of these.

Congratulations on your Canon A40 purchase, I've heard a few good things about that digicam.

Is it any good?

:D

I never said I got it =]. I was about to though, but that was before a best buy salesman told me it eats through batteries in 15 mins with the LCD on. I figured I would ask some more questions here and get answers from people who own this cam. Also, what's the deal with the nimh battery numbers (like 1600 or 1800)? I assume higher "rating" means more life, but then again I don't know anything about this.

check this thread out. Rossman kindly linked to a multitude of reviews of the a40 including consumer reviews. :)

Link

no mention anywhere that it eats up more batteries than any other digital camera.

I know where you can get a good deal on some high quality 1800 mAH batteries and nice MAHA charger ... how much can you afford for NiMH batteries with quick charger and car adapter?

Then that salesman is full of it. I got an A40 on Thursday and so far I'm VERY impressed with it. When I got home I put a set of Energizer 1200mAH (my oldest set, like 3 years old) batteries in it and they have not died yet. I've taken well over 100 pics and the LCD has been on plenty. So far it seems to have very good battery life.

If you want the absolute best batteries, get the Energizer 1850mAH batteries they sell at Best Buy. I got a set and they tested by FAR the highest of any NIMH AA's I've tested. They came in at 1600mAH. The next best batteries I have are the GP 1800's which tested at 1400mAH. All the other NIMH's I've tested came in from 900-1100mAH (and they are rated anywhere from 1200-1600mAH).

We've got one. Definitely a nice camera, but it'd be nice to have some nice high quality .tiffs or .tgas for editing. Sure .jpg saves space, but if you only want a few high quality pics...

Just avoid those cheap multipack batteries, it eats those horrifyingly fast. The Panasonic AA's it came with lasted pretty well.
I've now got a charger and 4 NiMH batteries. Higher is better.
