Can a knowledgeable powerseller or someone with lots of ebay experience share your wisdom and tell me the best time to list an auction?

I do lots of vigorous ebay research and generally find that the morning time (EST) before noon is the best time. Sundays too of course but before prime-time television (6pm EST).

This is for media and electronics, btw. So what do you guys thinK?

EDIT: what is media mail, is that the same speed as parcel post???

basically people don't watch my item all week long and show up before it ends, I shoudl say what is the best time to CLOSE a listing when the most people snipe others?

1030am, 3 day auction ending on a weekday for most auctions with a targeted audience aged 25+
745pm, 3 day auction ending NOT on friday or saturday for <25

Increase to 7 day, depending on item, decrease to 1 day, depending on item

1030 is my usual, preferred time. It's before lunch on the westcoast, and after lunch on the east coast. I find 7 day auctions to be a waste of time for the most part.

I find 10:30 est to be a great time as well. What about something like 4pm EST?

I'm going to list a dozen identical items in 1 auction, so I can't mess this up.

1030est is horrible as you're alienating the entire west coast

4pm EST is ok, I'd probably shift it to 4:18 or something so that people on the westcoast can get back from lunch. esp if you're still selling those designer clothes.

I try to do 5 day auctions and make them end around 7-8pm cst. People seem to be home during the week more than the weekends but its really hard to say.

I have very little business from the west coast selling designer clothing. Mostly because they all have 'off saks/nordstrom rack/boutique' etc on every corner. Canada and East coast is generally where the buyers are.

I value my experience much more than some listing calendar.


As a matter of fact, I spent 3 years listing Sunday 7pm 7 days before I realized that my profits were WAAAAAAAY better listing 3 days at 1030 on weekdays.

For my items (tech-related), I've settled on ~ 10:00 PM EST to start/end auctions. And I try to end them on Sunday/Monday.

For my items, I get a bulk of the bids in the last 30 minutes (all of my auctions start at $.99). And I find my split between East/West to be about 50/50.

What I am listing appeals to all audiences and older retirees.

I figure most retired old people are online before 11am because then they have to play golf at the country club, followed by the afternoon high tea and culminating in the Antiques Roadshow at 7pm, a 2 min. brisk walk to help with the arthritis and then promptly to bed before 8:15pm.

no MM and PP is not the same

media mail = media only, cd's, books, etc

they strap your shit on a mule and point him in the right direction. sooner or later it gets there.

don't be so dramatic, media mail is said by usps to be the same speed as parcel. Can anyone confirm reliability?

edit: I just checked USPS.com and it allows DC so that's all I really needed to make sure.

It's not really fair to charge $13 parcel post ($23 priority) to ship a box of $3 manuscripts when there is a perfectly good $4.68 option.

Sure buddy. In terms of my own experience, I have found that media mail takes anywhere from 7-21 days to arrive. Parcel Post takes 5-14, usually around a week.


I've handled 5 accounts totaling over 50k transactions as well as amazon, overstock, and half.

I don't give a fuck what USPS says.

I shipped some media mail a few months ago and it arrived in a week or so.

media mail is more fluke than not

hence strap on mule point in right direction


in terms of reliability i would say no more or less reliable than PP; just incredibly variable in terms of time
