PowerPoint backgrounds not always seen on the monitor

My PowerPoint backgrounds (templates) are sometimes not fully rendered on my monitor (LCD 15") when making new slides. Yet, when I shift into "slide show" mode, the backgrounds of the templates are all shown in full. Any ideas?
