According to this article, the PowerPlay internet gaming protocol thingy that Valve developed is going to be available soon through New Millenium Entertainment. It's supposed to provide better gaming by reducing latency, etc in addition to acting as a regular ISP. I dunno, I don't see how you can make the difference big enough to pull people away from the DSL/Cable hookup they already have. I set my ping filters to 60 and below on Gamespy and always have plenty of servers to choose from. Anyone have the inside scoop on how this really works? Their website only tells you how much it costs...naturally.

It's probably aimed more at people who can't get or can't afford some sort of broadband connection. I don't know the percentage of the U.S. in which broadband is available, but it's nowhere near 100% yet.

Actually, they're bringing out Cable and DSL after the initial dial-up is established. That's the part I didn't get....I don't know about cable, but I certainly don't have any latency issues with my DSL connection. I can't figure out quite what they're offering above and beyond a regular broadband connection.

Oh, you're right - didn't see that part about cable and DSL coming out later. Went to the web site - doesn't seem like they are offering much in the way of 'extras' - a few tournaments and such. But that part about getting server space if you sign up with your clan mates sounds interesting. Maybe that will be worth the money.
