Powermax maxtor code? anyone got one?

Maxtor is asking me to type in some power max code before I get an RMA approval.

I DL'ed the powermax diagnosic utility but it requires an A:\ which I don't have
installed on any of my comps. Plus I already know this drive is defective for
sure. Can anyone just give me a code?

thx.

just call up maxtor and tell them the problem. Say that you ran the test but the test took forever to complete and when it did complete there was no code.

That's what I had to do with my maxtor drive (after running the test for 36 hours) and they RMA'ed it without a problem.

if you tell them the drive isn't recognized by bios at all then they don't ask for a code

I had one giving me a smart failure on bootup, tried a bunch of their utils none could find a problem. Even used their LLF utility, same problem. They wanted me to try it in a separate pc, since I could, I did. After running it through the tests on the other PC it had no smart failure and all was well.

Anyway, you could probably connect a floppy drive for a bit. Or extract the files to a cd, boot off another CD and run them from the burned CD. (I'm assuming since you don't have a floppy you most likely have a CDRW).

Keep in mind if you lie, and they test it good, they can charge you for the new drive. I doubt they would, but, it's a possibility.

the powermax program won't let you extract to your HD. So I cannot
burn the files to a CD.

Maxtor = big hassle when rma comes

WD = no brainer, easy/fast.

I've wasted enough time with this drive and now I will have to waste more
on the phone with some rep who is probably from Iraq or something.

Yeah, Maxtor is a real pain in the ass to do a RMA with.

I bought a 60Giger back in June 01 and recently it started vibrating wildly. I called em up for a RMA cause I new it was about to go belly up on me. Well the 1st woman I spoke with agreed to set up a Advance RMA with me right away and send me a replacement drive right away, but for some reason we got cut off. So then I had to call back again and explain the story all over again and they want me to use the stupid Powermax utility. But I get no errors. So I call back like two more times before I wear THEM down, and they relent and agree to an advance RMA. And right on the original 60Gig Maxtor Retail box I had, it says 'No Quibble Warranty Service.' Yeah, sure. So I get a 80Gig refurbished HD.

But the newer drive is still a bit louder that I would like. My WD 120G 8Mb Cache drive I bought back in May is so silent I never even hear it at all. From now on, its WD all the way!

Sorry man, I never even answered your question:frown: I was just venting.

Sorry man.

I think how I got them to relent, was I said that within like 5 seconds of running the PowerMax utility, it would freeze up. I said I couldn't even finish the powermax utility. That my whole system would lock up on me, and the only way I could get back into XP was to hit the restart button. That silenced them pretty quick. I also said I tried booting to the disk from Safe Mode, but no luck, same 'problem.'

Yeah man, if you want to get things rolling along, you gotta just 'fib' a bit. BTW, I asked about what they do with the drive that they get back, and they said they just send them off to Singapore for testing, and refurbishment.

They're simply trying to ensure drives are actually bad to cut down on needless RMA's from noobs that don't understand proper jumper settings/cabling, etc.
