Powerline Networking Speed Question

I currently have the following setup. My internet connection connects into the second floor and plugs into a wireless router. Unfortunately, due to the location, the wireless signal strength is very poor and it's a struggle to get a solid connection anywhere else in the house, especially once you go to the first floor or the basement. So, several years back, I bought a couple of Powerline ethernet adaptors, a pair of Netgear XE102, one which plugs into the wireless router and one which hooks up a Mac Mini desktop. Those two are rated for 14 Mbps. In the basement, I have a Netgear XE104 which connects a Windows laptop, an XBox 360, and a PS3. That is rated for 85 Mbps.

Unfortunately, speeds are less than great. Connecting directly to the router, I get around 15-16 Mbps according to speedtest.net. If I plug a second Powerline adaptor in the same room as the one connected to my wireless router, I get about 6 Mbps. If I switch to a different room on the second floor, the speed drops to 3Mbps. In the basement, I still get around 3 Mbps, but the ping increases from 16ms to 50ms.

So I finally decided to look into an upgrade, and it appears that speeds have come a long ways since I first set it up, with quoted speeds of 250-500 Mbps for very reasonable prices. But, since I'm already not coming close to achieving the rated 14 Mbps on my current devices, and my speed increases when I set up two adaptors in the same room, I'm wondering if they or the wiring in my house is actually the bottleneck. If anyone else has any experience in a similar situation, it would be much appreciated. If not, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and try it myself and report back.

As is the case with wireless, quoted speeds for powerline only have any real meaning in an absolutely perfect environment. In the 'real world', if you can get half of the rated speed you are doing better than the vast majority of people. Powerline is very dependent on the electrical wiring in your house.

Well, ended up ordering a 200 Mbps kit from Amazon and it works great, getting full speed throughout the house. The old ones were definitely the bottleneck, not the wiring.

If I were the OP I would run out and buy few lotto tickets.

It is very nice that it working for you (the powerline) but that is happening Not because the Powerline technology is a sound technology. It working because your specific home electrical wiring and appliances seem not the disturb (or minimally do) the newer powerline modules that you bought.

Please be attentional, you never know which additional appliance can suddenly "rain" on your parade.🙁
