Powerline Networking Setup Recomendations

Hi Folks,

I am getting my house prepared to move in & I am looking at my network options. To date I have been let down too often by wireless & was going to lay some cat 5 cables until I remembered about Powerline Networking.

I would like a one to many setup: i.e. one adapter from the router to various locations around the house.

Probably around 3 separate locations with duel port access.

Would anyone be able to provide me some appropriate recommendations. I don't mind spending a little more if it will mean more reliable performance.

Network traffic would include: Streaming Netflix, PS3, Online gaming

Any help is greatly appreciated

Powerline is a sometimes somewhat OK alternative if the walls are already up and you can't run CAT5/CAT6. If you are in the process of building the house, do it right and run the wires.

Streaming Netflix? Gaming?

Just run CAT5e/CAT6.

IMO, Powerline is best suited for surfing and stuff like that where you don't need consistently fast speed and ping times are not an issue, in situations you definitely can't run Ethernet and wireless is unreliable due to layout, barriers, etc.

I've been able to stream HD over Powerline in certain setups, but in my experience it's been more the exception than the rule for consistent high bitrate streaming. In contrast, Ethernet just works.

If you're going to run cat5/6, just do it. Much better than powerline anything.

Yes. Powerline is for low bandwidth applications and when you cannot run a wire or wireless isn't a possiblity.

It's third (or fourth) tier networking option at best. If you were going to run wires anyway, I would still. Powerline is slower than wired and generally wireless and it has the wireless disadvantage of being a shared medium.
