Powerline network

For something that seems so practical, it's so unknown. Any cons about powerline networking? I just bought a wireless router and am now thinking of returning it to go the powerline route because it's supposedly faster and more reliable. Is it true? Or any other comments that would help me decide?

powerline netowrking?

off the top of my head I woudl say do anything over that. Not sure on any of the details about it, but wireless HAS to be better than that.

put it this way. the wireless stuff was MADE for networking computers, powerline was not.

you do mean powelrin as in through the electric outlets? IS that even really possible? Do you mean phone line?

either way its not as good as the other stuff

In general, PowerLine Network is a loser, and there technological reasons for it.

The Network Signal has to share the medium (power lines) with Electrical Instruments that generate huge amount of noise and terrible spikes. The Wires are not Twisted or Shielded and they are Ethernet "Hell".

As a result the Network Modules that are used to "Inject" and decode the Network signal are expensive to make and yield lower "Speed". Increasing the "Speed" will make them so large and expensive that it will be very hard to impossible to market them.

However, when the dream house (ala Mr. Gates) will be prevalent. Powerline devices will make the Washing Machines, Refrigerators, and Hair Salons instant Networked. These appliances do not need more "Speed" than the current Powerline modules in order to be efficiently control. To install Ethernet and CAT5 wires, for all of the home appliances will be too expensive, thus it is not really necessary to do it with Ethernet.

My guess is that the industry tries to keep the PowerLine alive until the "Dream Machines" become a reality (and mean time takes few suckers for a ride).

who uses powerline?

the dream house would not work in this way, as it is stupid. you even said that in your above post, but then said we will use it in the future?

ya right.

Let me answer the way you do. What OS are you using? :disgust:

Unix why?

the dream house will not sue powerline. and further more assumign the dream house woudl be built from scratch it would have networkign built into it. It is cheap to do.

The next versions of powerline and phoneline will supposedly be more than 10 times faster than their current versions. If so, they might have great appeal to people, but whether they can actually deliver remains to be seen. Like Jack says though, the current versions don't seem wildly popular. Still, if you've got a house where wireless just doesn't work well, powerline or phoneline may be attractive, and it is possible to combine phoneline/powerline with wireless -- in fact I do it in my house, to get a WAP into a location with poor wireless reception where I don't have an ethernet jack conveniently installed. A wired backbone is the ideal though, if you can pull it off.

yes we cannot forget that the best solution is still to lay down a dedicated wire whenever possible. be it ethernetc, fibe whatever. dedicated line is the best way. if that is not an option then you seek alternatives.

Like you said, if they can deliver. Current powerline was supposed to be amazing because the wires already exist. I'm less than impressed with current products, and its future with PCs. If it does catch on with smart devices, it will still not involve the PC.

I'm going to have to go with martin on this one, wired rules, use wireless where you can't wire, or need to have mobility.

i would never ever trust powerline. not with all the microwaves in the world.

what if the dryer kicks on?

I don't like the whole concept. I dont liek phoneline networking either.,
