Short Version:
Need good quality powerline adapters to extend wireless in a big old house that can't have any new wiring.

Long Version:
I need suggestions on how to best extend the wireless network in a large old house that doesn't have (and can't have) network wiring inside the house.

The situation is that Internet access to the home is provided by a Comcast cable line on the north side of the house. The modem sits there close to the north wall of the home. There isn't any other option for the position of the modem since Historical Society regulations won't allow any wiring or holes in the walls for new wires or connections. Wireless access inside the house is decent in all but the farthest southwest and southeast corners. That's not actually an issue since wireless isn't needed in those locations.

The problem is that there is a secondary pool house about 50 feet south of the south wall of the house that also needs wireless access. It's about 200 feet total distance from the existing modem/router and the middle of the pool house, with multiple heavy oak walls and cabinets in the direct line between the two locations. Running a conduit all the way from the current cable modem location to the pool house would be the best option if it was possible, but not only isn't it allowed, but it would be really expensive and not really preferable since it would have to either go under a concrete path the whole distance or go through the roots of trees that line the path, so it's not a good option. My next choice would be to run an ethernet drop to the south side of the house and put up an AP there, but again, we can't put any new wiring in the walls.

The electrical wiring in the home was completely redone about 30 years ago so I'm considering the possibility of putting a powerline adapter at the current modem location and another on the south wall of the house with a wireless AP there to provide wireless to the yard and pool house. I think this should work since the whole first floor of the house is on the same power circuit. The question here is which adapters to use. Moderately expensive (around $200 or less for the pair of adapters) is OK for good quality but less expensive is of course better if the quality is still good.

I've done some searching online and gotten so many conflicting results on reviews that I'm having trouble making an educated decision. I have seen some units that combine a powerline adapter and wireless AP, which would be ideal if the wireless is good enough to transmit through a thick wood and stone external wall, through about 50 feet of loosely scattered trees, and then through the wood and brick wall of the pool house. Speed is not as important as a stable signal and reliable equipment that won't die in a few months.

All I can contribute is my own limited experience with power line carrier. I've used the Netgear XAV1004 hub with a XAV2001 router tap for three years with no problems. The signal for me has been very dependable and fast enough for me (but I'm not a gamer). I've only had to reset the router tap two or three times over that time.

Good luck...

Thank you for the input, PowerEngineer. Anybody else have other suggestions for reliable equipment so I can have some options to look at?
