I have an Asus A8V Deluxe. It allows software based fan control for one CPU fan and one chassis fan. What I would like to do is plug two 120mm Nexus fans into the chassis fan header by using a Y-splitter(all connectors have three pins).

How will my motherboard calculate RPMs? Will it report a number that is a sum of RPMs from both fans? Will my RPMs simply be all over the place?

RPMs will be a sum or all over the place. It depends on how often the fans on in sync. Most likely it will not work right. You'd be better off cutting the tach signal (yellow wire) on one of the fans.
