.. the topic says it all..

172watts is the heat dissapation.. here are the actual energy specs

221watts

11.7amps

24vdc (only need 17vdc to 18vdc as any higher doesn't result in better cooling..)

so.. i've been going over and over how to supply power to this.. a second 400w power supply? or what? i don't want to spend more then 40 bucks for any item unless it's another ATX power supply..

Don't count on 17 to 18 volts as being the sweet spot for your pelt. This depends on the heat load and cooling system capacity. The switching PSUs above allow for about 10% voltage adjustment. The linier PSUs from Astron allow for a greater range of voltage adjustment.

I water cool.. and 18v is the sweet spot.. because I've read a review and the guy used the exact same peltier from the exact same distributor as me.. and he said after 18vdc the hot side just got hotter and the cold side didn't get colder..

Believe what you want but I am speaking from the voice of exprience with four different pelt systems. It's best to dial in your pelts voltage for optimum results in your particular system, much like tuning the coolant flow in a watercooling system. You may want to play with Kryotherm Pelt Software to verify what I am suggesting is the truth.

Ok.. I can believe you.. but how do I go about powering this piece of coldness? I would like to do it through a 430w Enermax PSU.. or even a 510w Antec PSU designed for dual MP systems..

Computer PSUs will only provide 12 volts unless you put two of them together. You will probably need between 18 to 22 volts. Check the links I posted. Sometimes a real bargin PSU can be found on Ebay.

Having played with all sorts of peltier setups back in the day, I can tell you from expereience that the best thing for you to do is scour the net looking for a cheap power supply that will actually provide the full 24v DC current you need. That may not be so easy, as Irecall it took me several weeks to finally find a 24v PS for under $80.

However, as Mr. Thompson indicated, it is possible to use PC power supplies to provide the power for your peltier. There is a great article here which explains in great detail how to connect 2 or more PC AT power supplies for use with a 172W peltier. Another article you should check out can be found here which discusses everything you need to do to prevent condensation, which is a REALLY IMPORTNANT consideration.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help and all but I already have a 24vdc @ 12.5amp DC Power supply. I won't say how much it cost as I plan to sell them on my website. But I will say that you can pick them up on my site for under 80.00!
