powering fans off the m/b: Iwill KK266r & ABit KT7a problems

My new Iwill KK266r would boot Win98se, but not enter SETUP, a BLUE band appearing across the bottom of the screen when I'd pressed <DEL> on boot. (A reset would be required.)

Iwill tech-supp said this indicated a PSU problem, so I explored along those lines. 'Turned out to be the fans powered off the m/b: in my case, three Enermax speed-controlled fans, plus a quiet fan on the heat sink. In total, they were rated at about 1 amp @ 12v.

I'd previously experienced this on an ABit KT7a, but hadn't identified the cause: in fact, I'd just spent a bundle shipping that board in for service only to have them reply "it's the CPU". 🙁 Since that board was out-of-service, I bought the Iwill -- it wouldn't go wasted when the ABit came home!

Consider this another warning to avoid taking these m/b fan headers lightly.

I think it is easy to get up in the 1 amp range - many people with the fast powerful noisy Deltec 60mm fan popular on many cpu heatsinks don't realize that it alone draws 0.48 amps.

There's a lot to be said for having most of your major fans on 4 pin Molex connectors to the PSU harness.
