Powerful laptop powerfully slow in games :( Any help?

I am trying to play NHL 07 on my new Dell E1705 with the specs mentioned above. It's running woefullly choppy at the 1024x768 resolution (the game does not support widescreen without a patch). Any ideas why? Could it just be the non-native resolution? Or what am I missing?

Are you running Vista? nvidia is still trying to write some decent drivers for it.

Nope, XP Media. FIFA 07 works wonderfully well. Go figure...

Let's try the obvious:

Did you reinstall the drivers, preferably with the newest drivers?
Did you check for a patch for the game?
Did you check for spyware etc?
How much ram is the game using?
What about CPU usage?
What are your temps?

non native should not make it choppy, it might make the pixels look to be the wrong shape but choppyness should not be an issue. Is NHL 07 patched, are you running the newest drivers fro your 7900gs, have you checked dells forum to see if others are having issues? Also run 3dmark 06 and see how your results compare to where they should be (ie if your getting significantly lower then expected scores there it suggests a driver issue not an NHL 07 specific issue).

Thanks, guys. I think I've isolated the problem to the game itself, since FIFA and NBA both work fine.

Runs fine on my lappy. Centrino Duo T2500, 2GB Ram, 1600 512MB. Could it be maybe just an issue the game has with nvidia?

The only way that's going to happen is through some sh!tty crippleware version like 8300 etc.
