PowerEdge 2200 server dead?

Motero

Senior member
For the past 8-10 months now, this server would lose it's video (onboard)...the monitor light was green but nothing would show up. After replacing the monitor several times and finding no problems with the old monitor, we realized that after a reboot, their monitor would kick on...so we decided it was a systemboard that needed to be replaced. We are running SCO Unix so we did not was to attempt to put a video card in and install stuff for it, plus their machine is under a contract where we have to fix the problem 100%.

Well today rolls around and good ole me could not get response from the keyboard when I went to shut the server down (yes without seeing anything). So I shut the power off manually. After this, the server would not beep or post, but the drives and fans would spin up. The monitor is getting no signal...I spent an hour on the phone with Dell taking out just about everything from this server...could not get any POST or beep. Before I spend $500 on the board, is there any other thoughts or am I right in saying I need a systemboard?

Is it of the DUAL CPU variety?

Try disconnecting the Temperature Sensor on the CPU(s)

Swap out or reseat the DIMMS.

Remove the Video card or plug into the onboard video.
Depending on which mainboard (Tyan or Intel) I have seen
them revert to the onboard video randomly.

Dual CPU board, but 1 cpu and 1 terminator installed. Tried reinstalling and just taking out the RAM. I am not getting any beep codes. There is no video card installed...it's all onboard. Any other thoughts?

I'm in the process of replacing a dell motherboard in a dimension 4400. Talk about hard to get dell to send a replacement under warranty.

Yeah...mine was 2 years out of warranty...but they had me on the phone for over an hour taking everything out and trying new things each time...of course it's nothing short of what I already did.

By the way, it was the motherboard, so I didn't waste $500 for nothing! 🙂

If you can find the part numbers, they gave me the direct number of some of the sales people...and all they ask is the tag number on the back and where to send the stuff to. Never asked me about talking to a technician or anything else...maybe it's different for warranty?
