Hi,

I recently stuck together my new Athlon 64 rig (minus the processor and ram.............[i was bored/impatient]). I powered on the computer a couple times to see if my cold cathode tube thingie was working and it powered on fine (with four red leds on the d-bracket as expected). Anyways, i somehow ended up taking the clear cmos jumper off the mobo...and when i put it back, i think i put it in the "clear" position. I cant remember exactly what happened when i powered on the computer, but now(yes, the jumper is set back to the original position), as soon as I plug the power cable into the power supply, the computer turns on automatically and leds 1 and 4 on the d-bracket are orange while leds 2 and 3 are red( i think). Did I damage my motherboard? :S Thx for reading my life story.......anyways, any help would be appreciated :p no more sleepless nights

you cleared the cmos.. so i guess now you need to go into bios into power settings, and look for something like WHEN POWER IS RESTORED, DO THIS- set it to do nothing or whatever

Starting it with the jumper in the "clear" position doesn't damage anything. It might refuse to start (because the real time clock isn't running), but that's all.

Moving jumpers around in a computer that isn't disconnected from the mains, now that's another story. Add the usual ESD neglect, and you might have an explanation for the damage you see.

So my board IS damaged?

Not necessarily. Restore the jumper to the correct position, and look at your LEDs to see if there was damage.

I agree that it should not have caused any damage. Might you have jiggled something loose when you were accessing the jumper?

Phew, as I thought.....that little "turning on your computer with your jumper set to clear position will damage your mainboarad" in the MSI booklet kinda scared me :p Hmm......maybe my mobo IS set to turn on as soon as power is restored....guess ill just have to wait for my procesor and ram before I can actually find out :S heheheheh.........I'lll just keep waiting.......sleeplessly!!! Btw, I know that this is a little offtopic, but anyone know the approximate price of a single stick of 512mb OCZ 3200EL Platinum Rev2..........Theres this store in Ottawa ordered one for me.....they say its 140 Cdn.......this seems a little low seeing as how the price was 230 Cdn in Sept. Just curious :p

*slaps forehead*

Who do you think processes the BIOS program when there's no processor in it?
