Hi,

I'm building a cheap comp (S754 with PCI-e) and I wanted to know if the PowerColor X800GTO 128MB is a good card for it... Do keep in mind that I live in Belgium (and hardware is quite expensive here), so don't give me any links on Newegg etc... (that only makes me cry... ;))

This is the card I am talking about, it has the standard DDR1, but with its 256-bit memory bus, that gives it already a decent amount of bandwidth I'd say... Does anyone know what core this possibly could be, and if this DDR1 overclocks well too...?

The price is approx. $ 180, I know that you can get better cards in the States for that money, but here the cheapest X800GTO 256MB is already $ 225... A 6800GS is a no-go too, because here it costs at least $ 310... I know, it's sad... :(

The only cards I can get at that price point are a 128MB 6600GT (not even a vanilla 6800), or a 256MB X800GT... With its extra pipelines and some overclocking, the GTO will probably outperform them both... Not?

Seeing that this is going to be a budget gaming comp, the $ 180 (? 155) is really the highest I can go...

And I still had another question, is there still some life in it, and I mean with Pixel Shader 2.0b... I know it supports up to 1.536 instructions (I know too that Far Cry and HL2 maximum only have some 60 instructions), but the upcoming Unreal Engine 3 should already take up to 1.000 instructions... I know I will have to turn everything down, but the question is how long I am still going to manage to "play" games with this PS 2.0b... How many years do I have...?

Thanks a lot!

The gto is better than a 6600gt or a x800gt even without overclocking, so out of the 3 choices it's the best card. Also, dont worry about SM2 or SM3 unless you're buying a high end card for $300+. It doesnt matter if a card can support 1500 instructions or 5000 instructions, in the end it comes down to how fast it can render those instructions, and I dont think any currently available card will render scenes with 1000 instruction shaders at playable frame rates.

dont get that one...powercolor has a much better "x800gto 16" it has 16 pipelines and 256 mb
it is reviewed here
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2005/powercolor/x800gto16/g1.htm

by the way, if you live in belgium you should be able to order the 6800gs online for less than 310 euro
http://www.alternate.nl/html/shop/productDetails.html?artno=JAXX49&
xxx version of the xfx 6800gs for 269 euro
that dutch online shop will send it to belgium for 15 euro
still a high price, but if you decide to buy an x800 card (which are good value cards) then go for an 256mb x800gto, not 128mb
for instance these two:

dingetje, you don't happen to be from the Netherlands, do you...? :)

Daar had ik in de verste verte nog niet aan gedacht, om m'n tuig bij Alternate te bestellen, ze hebben goeie prijzen, dat is waar... Bedankt voor je reply!
