PowerColor Hd7850 - going blackscreen in idle mode

Hey,

I've got a friend with a PowerColor HD7850 + a arctic cooling turbo 2.

Now, when he oc's his temps are under 60 at 1200mhz.
However often when in 2d\desktop\idle mode screen will go black.
Completely BLACK, and not go back (like a driver crash).

Only a RESET will help.

This happens on ALL OC's from 950 to 1200 mhz.

I'm wondering wether he just got unlucky and chipwise it's already degraded or there's something else to it?

He's using 12.7, drivers clean.

He has a 850w Corsair AX, so PSU shouldn't be the issue.
Maybe powerdraw is bugged?

This happens with any OC tool from trixx to gputweak and the CC catalyst OC area.

Yea, just wondering if anyone has an idea, if it hopefully mnight not be... the chip itself :)

I could have sworn there where other threads like this....
I think it was something with powersaveing features of the OS.

And no its not your card thats a dud,
it has something to do with the OS software / drivers.

Im guessing you left your PC doing nothing for a hour or so, come back and screen is black and wont wake up? Its a power saveing feature..... the "issue" is the not wakeing up part.
The easy solution is just to turn it off :p

No.

It goes black during 2d mode, like i said
not IDLE mode.

Surfing the web or watching a youtube vid or something.
Generally does not happen ingames.
Actually has not happened once during a gaming.

Probably has something to do with the card not going back to proper 2D clocks when it is overclocked.

I don't know what else could be the problem besides that.

Any idea to debug or help or test something?

Kinda on edge here, annoying as hell.
other than waiting for new AMD drivers :/

Could you try uninstalling the 12.7s and moving to the 12.8 Beta? I had idle issues with some of the post 12.4 Catalysts including 12.7, although it was usually that it wouldn't seem to wake from ULPS, so I would have a black screen after leaving on my computer overnight.

I've also had black screens when I pushed my overclock too far not related to temp (and not the usual driver crash where stuff freezes but you can eventually get it back or ctrl+alt+delete), so it's also possible your card really is a bum overclocker.

Does the problem occur when you overclock using OverDrive?

Don't use beta drivers, I installed some once and ever since I was not able to open CCC until I did an OS wipe.

Yes, the issues occur for him ONLY during OC.

Even with CC and with Trixx or afterburner etc etc.

The funny thing is occurs even with 90 mhz (950) bump, no matter voltage.
wether stock or 1225 mV.

Basicly any OC, and sometimes the screen while in desktop goes black, no driver crash.
Computer continues playing music or whatever it's doing.

And usually ctrl alt delete doesn't work.

It basicly just blackscreens until reset - the funny thing is it's been stable on 1250mhz in heaven\3dmark no issues.

We left it idling overnight in a game(skyrim) - and it didn't happen , only seems to happen while OC'ing in idle\2d clocks.

Im wondering if its a powerdraw issue?
should try with only 10% extra powerdraw.
perhaps.

@MisterMac

it still sounds like the same issue, I thought it was at first.

When he gets black screens is when hes on the card 2D clock rates, ei. he s looking at desktop, doing nothing. Right?

My guess is same as last time, he walks away from PC for 30mins, PC goes into power saveing mode and doesnt wake up from it. IF that is the case all he has to do is turn off all the power saveing features in windows, and it wont do it anymore.

@Arkadriel

No, it wil lhappen during youtube watching or flipping thru a HD looking foir anything.

Randomly, and it happens during ANY OC at ANY voltage.
This is why i'm hoping it's not a bad chip, since it's been running @ 1250hz with 1225 mv.
Imagine your doing desktop stuff from "word processing" to youtube, you facebook to msn while listening to stuff in winamp, and boom black screen.

Music continues, message sounds from ims continue everything.
Just black screen.

Point being this issue would occur ark, with stock too if that was the issue.
It only occurs when any OC is applied, and does not happen when user is idle, happens when user is actively doing something infact.

I have the same black screen issue, doing whatever (only 2d desktop like your issue as well) BUT my screen comes back after about 1-2 secs. It has done it on several of my cards.

Some people were saying it is a monitor/monitor cable issue...maybe try a different cable? Since the screen comes back, and it happens only sporadically, I live with it.

EDIT: Try disabling flash player hardware acceleration. Some people have had issues with that before, although not the same symptoms.

OH, didn't consider it could be cabling or that at all.

Will give it try ;)

thanks.
