Powercolor 3870

Great card for resolution up to 16x10. Stronger than the 4670 for a lower price.

EDIT: Free shipping promo is gone. Add $9 to the cost now. Grrrr...

Careful, they cheapened it with GDDR3 memory. This is essentially an overclocked 3850 with a two slot heatsink. Not bad, but not a regular full blown 3870.

You are getting 900 MHz GDDR3 instead of 1125 MHz GDDR4.

3870 and 3850 have the same gpu, same number of shaders, etc. The big difference was the higher GPU clock, two slot cooler, and faster, more expensive, GDDR4 ram on the 3870.

At moderate resolutions (1680x1050 for example) I doubt the card will be bandwidth limited to any noticeable degree. The considerably faster core speed is really what sets these two cards apart, not a small amount of memory bandwidth.

Good catch!

At this point I'd almost rather have a Radeon 4670, if I were to buy team red. There's an MSI that is $65 AR and while the 3870 has the memory bandwidth due to 2x bit width, the 4670 is still competitive, and draws much less power (doesn't even need a PCIe plug).

This is pretty good for 49.99 AR plus 8.25 shipping at the Egg. They had free shipping last week, but not as of right now.

Free shipping is back for the $50AR Powercolor 3850. Their 3870 looks like it has a better heatsink, and a different board layout, which might be worth the extra $.

Notice both the 3870 and 3850 seem to have two wire fans. I wonder if they run at full speed all of the time.

I've avoided Powercolor, for poor build quality, since buying a GeForce3. That card came with loose surface mount parts in the static bag, and the bracket had to be modded before the card would fit any of several machines.

Newegg has a Sapphire 3870 with GDDR4 at $90AR ($20 more) but the rebate is through the infamous rebates411 outfit.

I'll just wait 4 weeks and see what the fallout is after BF. I'm in the market for a recent GPU, and I guess a 4870 might do the trick if it drops below $100 by then. (doubtful, but who knows with the way they're pumping models out lately:)

Typical Newegg, free shipping is gone as of this microsecond. I will jump on this if free shipping pops back up. Good deal for the combo for sure.
