I need a laptop soon and I've narrowed it down to a Powerbook or a Thinkpad.

All I need a laptop for is Microsoft Office, aim, iTunes, bittorrent. I'm getting a D70 soon so I'll need it to hold all my photos as well. Does the powerbook seem like a good match for me?

Or should I just stay with the more familiar Windows XP'd Thinkpad?

I play no games so that's not an issue.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I have owned 2 thinkpads and they both fallen apart. go with the powerbook and mac os. mac os is great for the net , less worry about virus.

What about a cheap generic laptop with a good warranty?

I'd rather have something with a brand name.

Dell, Sony, Toshiba,... are all NAME brands as well

Yeah but I hate Sony+Toshiba, Dell laptops are quite flimsy.

Get the new iBook. Has everything you need. Even comes w/ airport extreme as standard. You do need to drop some money for addition RAM though. You need at least 512MB total. PowerBook is not worth the extra cost. iBook only has a trail version of MS Office, so you need to buy that too.

T42, Hell I just bought one in october after a string of 3 sh!tty laptops. I got to say this is the best laptop I have EVER USED! Yes, EVER USED! Though I did a VERY THOUROUGH search of the IBM website for this laptop and it's got everything I need. 7200RPM drive, Radeon 9600, 512MB of ram (upgraded to 1GB afterwards), 15" screen like my previous sony laptop, good battery life, 1.7GHZ Centrino processor. Be sure to try to get either the student discount or the IBM stock holder's discount because they will help tremendously with the price (mine normally $2500-2600! But got it instead for only about $2100!

Where's the option to get a student discount on the website if there is any?

i think either one will be good, but i would personally like my T41 more than powerbooks because it has the IBM nipple in addition to a trackpad. i can't stand using trackpads, the nipple is just much better imo. also i don't know about apple, but i can personally say that IBM has very good service... i got my machine back in 2 days with minimal work on my part.

whichever is cheapest, in that case. They'll both do the job just fine.

lol nipple. I believe they call it the trackpoint, and I agree, I mostly use it over the pad. I especially love the sandpaper like textured replacement IBM included.

The Powerbook is a whole lot more laptop than you need if that's all you're going to do with it...

If I were you I would get an iBook. The Powerbook would be overkill and you can save some money.

What really is the diff between an iBook and a powerbook? I always thought it was basically the outside appearance for the most part.

Battery life & performance is better on the powerbooks/iBooks. Plus it's a mac so it's just going to work. Got sweet design features like having the wireless aeriel surrounding the monitor to provide better reception, etc and is more rugged against impacts.
Screen quality is amazing on the powerbooks, plus they're the thinnest *fully featured*notebooks available.

Go mac, such an easy decision!
