Hello guys,

I am thinking of buying Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz 512MB ram etc... haven't made up my mind between a combo drive or superdrive yet. Until now I mainly used a PC but am ready to dive into the world of Mac. Before I go out and buy one, wanted your input. Is 12inch G4 a good buy compared to 15inch etc..

Thank you

One thing to consider with the 15" is that it is fairly big. I had one, and sold it to get the 12". I'm not a small guy buy any means, but it seemed a little big to lug around. It seems closer to a desktop replacement type laptop. Performance would be the same, but you have 2 sodimm slots instead of 1 on the 15", as well as the 9700 mobility. Superdrive is questionable, as I don't really use mine and usually use another machine to burn DVDs, but it can't hurt. The only thing you really lose out on in the 12" is the screen resolution, but you can hook it up to a monitor and set the resolution to anything you want. Oh, and the 12" does not have a FW800 port or PC card slot, but I never used either when I had the 15" so I don't miss it on the 12".

If you plan on taking with you every where you go, I would consider the 12". Also, don't get your RAM from Apple. Places like ewiz.com and newegg have 1GB sodimms for around $150 or less.

I agree, however I was going to point out the the opposite: the 12 inch is fairly small. The 12" will obviously be more convient if you want to lug this thing around, but the screen size/resolution does bother me. If you aren't doing much more than web browsing and e-mail checking it's certainly bearable. Once you get into graphic applications, multi-tasking, etc, things may get cramped. If you can, get to an Apple store and compare the two. In the end, it's all opinion (minus the small hardware differences).

This will be my first Mac experience and won't be using it for anything in particular, just testing the water sort of speak. Won't be doing any heavy graphical work, will mainly use it for Internet, occasional Photoshop, and messenger type of thing. If I really end up liking Mac I will buy a G5 desktop later on.

Not much of a gamer either.

You should get the 12" iBook. It's about a grand, and will do what you want just fine. I got the 500mhz one way back when as my first Mac, and loved it. I have the 15" powerbook, and it's great too. If I buy another one, it'll be an iBook though.

After looking at the powerbook I don't think I would ever compare the look to any laptop :) . I think I will just get the 12inch with superdrive.

Whatever you get, upgrade the RAM.. 512 is ok, 1G if you can afford it.

Get the 1GB from newegg or ewiz. I got the 1GB PC3200 Samsung sodimms for $150 from ewiz, and it works great. Better than the $500 Apple will charge you.

Definately.. I got my 1gb from the same place. They sent me the wrong stick at first, but were really cool about getting it switched out.

I love my 15" 1.67ghz to death. If you're looking to travel, it is on the big side. It's worth it to me though, the screen is amazing. The 12" is awesome too. Its so compact it's amazing. I second the recommendation for samsung ram from ewiz. Its the same stuff apple uses for waaay less. You will NOT be disappointed with OSX. With reguards to your questions.. size: get whichever fits your needs. 12" travels well, 15" has a nicer, bigger screen. combo or superdrive: For me superdrive was not worth it. Again base it on your need. I had no use for superdrive because my desktop has a DVD burner. You can easily transfer files to a desktop to burn to DVD if you already have a burner.

Still trying to make up my mind between 12" or 15". I am not a hardcore graphics user and am not much concerned about the size. Are the backlight, bigger screen etc worth the money or should one stick with 12"?

How often will you be carrying it around? If a lot, think about getting the smaller one. I like my 15", but if I carried it everywhere I'd be saving for a 12". :p

Choosing between the 12'' or the 15'' is totally up to you. I would, however, choose the 12'' because I love the small size. My sister purchased a 12'' iBook, but with only 256mb of RAM, about 3 weeks ago for $999. I love it. The size is great, and does not seem to that small.

I would get the Powerbook 12'' because of the size. But then, I would want the 15'' Powerbook. I love the backlit keyboard on the 15'' Powerbook. Plus, the PC card slot may come in handy one day. Come to think about it, if I saw the two side by side, 12'' or the 15'', I think I would end up getting the 15''. But thats just me. :)

I think going from a PC to a MAC is a bad idea I bought a iMac DV 450 like 4 or 5 years ago and sold it shortly after I used PC for a long time and was not happy with it at all, mainly because of the software for it.

I bought an iBook in 2001, and have been happy with it ever since.

I am on the same boat as Thin Lizzy. I wish 12" had atleast the backlight, it's just awesome. Although I read some where that 12" has better battery life compared to 15" and 17". That's one though decision to make. 15" widescreen looks sweet when I saw it next to 12". hmmm

imacs are not good, go for either their lappys or their full size towers...

or their ipods...
