Powerbook battery explodes

Blog entry

Just a warning to everyone: we woke up this morning at 6am because the apartment was filled with smoke and our laptop was on fire. It wasn't plugged in, and it had been put to 'sleep' over night. It's only a year old, so the lesson is: DON'T LEAVE YOUR LAPTOP ON UNATTENDED!

hmm should tell gf to do shut down instead of sleep mode from now on
she has a dell latitude d410
which worries me now, should i leave work to go home just to make sure it doesn't catch on fire? 😛

What's the point of using standby? Just throw the notebook into hibernate or just shut it down.

I do standby since my Nic won't pick back up no matter what after a hibernate, I have to reboot just to get it to even show back up.

Other than that I'd agree.

How the fvck can these laptops overcharge if there is an IC chip in the chargers?

Ausm

Supposedly this one wasn't even being charged at the time, it was just in sleep mode - and unplugged.

To the defense of Macs, it seems there was a recall on powerbook batteries way back in 04. Not too sure, though; I only got this from reading the comments of the blog entry.
