Powerbook 1400cs

So I found this Powerbook 1400CS at the local goodwill for $3 and picked it up on a whim after seeing that the battery had enough juice to power it up once.
Looks like it is running OS 8 or 9 and I think it has a 166mhz CPU.
I know it isn't powerful enough to run OSX in its current state, but would it be useful as is or would it need some type of upgrading?

There is no substantial upgrade that could be made. While you could get more RAM, you most likely wont see substantial performance differences, though if you can find compatible RAM in one of these free or free + shipping threads around, it wouldn't hurt. The 1400CS came out in 1996, and the 166MHz CPU was the top end of that line before it was discontinued. I think you can get it up to 9.2.2...so as far as productivity, you could do some Office 98 work on it...and browse the web (slowly) with Netscape 7 or a very early Mozilla 1ish or slightly older than 1.0 build. That said, $3 is a fun price for something to play with like that. There were some amusing and fun OS 9 games that you could play as well.
