ou may remember back in February, we were all excited to learn that Marie Holmes, the 26-year-old, single mother of four, had won the Powerball lottery.

Holmes, of North Carolina, decided that she was going to accept her $188 million winnings in one lump sum, meaning she was awarded $127 million. After taxes, she received $88 million. And while Holmes announced that she had plans to pay her tithes and set up college funds for her children, she’s ended up doing something entirely different with her riches.

Shortly after she won the money, Holmes posted $3 million bond for her boyfriend Lamarr McDow. McDow was in jail, facing heroin trafficking charges. McDow was implicated after an investigation unearthed more than 8,000 bags of heroin.

But Holmes found herself behind bars too recently. Last month, police came to her home to arrest McDow who had violated conditions of his parole by missing curfew. When officers searched the house, they found McDow had a .45 caliber pistol and there was less than a half an ounce of the drug and paraphernalia in Holmes’ Brunswick County home.

That is pretty effing stupid if she paid the entire amount instead of using a bail bondsmen. afaik if you post bail and are arrested and charged with a similar crime the original bail is forfeited. And on the 6 million bond chances are high he will be found guilty. Which means the court will take out court costs before returning the money.

I think it was dumb either way to bail out this deadbeat. But if she would had used a bondsmen she would be out 900K instead of 3 million + court costs.

Murderers get less of a bail set. And, when it was reduced to like a million, she could have paid it and both skipped to another country without extradition and living happily.

He was not "Dealing," he was distributing heroin. 8000 bags is not a street level dealer.

And with as many deaths as I have seen from heroin, I'd be fine with remanding (without bail) anyone caught with that much heroin.

I'd wager at least one of those baggies was going to be someone's death (if not more)

Trafficking herion is dealing. Dealing is selling, on any level, a controlled substance.

And the more I think about it, the more the $9 million bail makes sense. If he was higher up in the distribution level, there is a good chance he could come up with $1 million+ and make bail with ease. It has to be a level that is hard to stomach if you jump bail and are caught.

She should have just left his ass in jail, IMO. Wasn't her problem to deal with until she made it her problem to deal with.

That would be the smartest thing to do. But, she plays the lotto after all.

Her dropping $9 million is all relative, if I dropped $9,000 to bail someone out I'd be in the poor house. She dropped a thousand times that and still has over $50 million. While she's not smart and will probably end up broke. 9 mil from her total's a drop in the bucket. And since he's a drug dealer he could probably take a few mil and flip it and give her $9+ mil back

I'm a pretty big saver, put about 10-15k away into the wife and my Roths each year. By my math I should be cresting the big $1M around age 57-58, but maybe sooner if I get paid more than 30k a year in 11 years from now.

Bull. I have a relative that got caught with 2 small bags, not 8000. He got 3.5 to 40 years. He was out in 3.5, and he is white.

I think it depends more on where you are, not race.
