Interesting logic here...

Lottery organizers hope the price change will entice more people to play because jackpots are getting bigger and the odds of winning are improving.

I think it will cause fewer people to play as $2 just doesn't sound and feel as good as a $1.00 ticket.

Edit: It might keep people who should not be playing (i.e. don't have the money) from spending money that they don't have but I doubt it.

I imagine US lottery operate the same way as Canadian in that it is legislated to give out x% of the take. So if your ticket price doubles, the prize will go up too. 2 bux is not a whole lot of sting given the premise of huge jackpot.

Lottery, the "bad at math tax"

I have a feeling the winners would say otherwise. I'm sure everyone would think differently about the lottery after winning a good amount of cash. I've never won anything more than a few bucks but I still play from time to time.

Even they ain't happy. Daughter knows the son of a guy that won 43 million (after taxes), and he is terrified that his grandkids will be kidnapped for ransom. Even moving, changing to unlisted phone, etc., etc., they are still constantly hounded by con artists and charities, and just people begging for money with their sob stories, some probably real, some not.

silly idea. i don't mind throwing a buck every now and then on lotto. that buck gives me some wishful thinking about "what if".

Only the rich should have the chance at more money

The lottery is an upward wealth redistribution system, so it's doing it's job. The winners (proles) fritter the money away and end up worse off than they started, while their lawyers, financial advisers and brokers make out like bandits. As it should be.

Doesn't matter if fewer people play, as long as it's at least 50% of current people. Still more money coming in.

hm.. starts Jan 15. what happens to the old jackpot $ on Jan 14? rolls over?

"jackpots are getting bigger and the odds of winning are improving."
odds of winning for $1 is like 1 in 200M. so if the jackpot is $200M cash, then it's worth it because payout=odds.

if the same odds for $2, then you need $400M cash payout since you just doubled the ticket price, RIGHT?

odds of winning should not change at all, if they pull the balls out the same as before, the only thing to change is the payout(which I would expect to go down).

So your money odds would slightly go up or down depending on the jackpot, but the everything else will stay the same(getting 5 numbers correct and down).

The lottery is like a tax on the stupid. If it floats your boat, sure. Go for it.

Everyone on AT fails basic reading and math

They are going from 39 to 35 on the power ball itself.

Odds of winning are improving because of changes the game is making in the numbers players can choose.

The number of Power Ball numbers to choose from will decrease from 39 to 35.

That will raise the odds of winning from 1 in 192 million to 1 in 175 million.
