Ten players won $1 million each when the jackpot was $340 million. None of the ten had paid the extra dollar for Powerplay which would have given them each $2 million each instead. So you should probably go ahead and cough up the extra dollar so you wouldn't be kicking yourself like these people. It's actually a sucker's bet, and you'll probably never win enough to recoup the extra money you spend, but at least when you do win anything other than the jackpot your reward is multiplied.

You are completely ignoring the effect of taxes on your mutual fund investment. Even if you just buy and hold the fund's activities generate taxable income for you every year.

The insidious bit is that given how much it would cost a poor-person in various government benefits (food stamps, housing, EIC etc) it does make more fiscal sense to "invest" in the lotto than yourself. This welfare system is fucked... You can throw your money away: we'll give you more money; you want to be responsible despite having a very low income: we'll fuck ya.
