what exactly is a power typer? just guessing, does that mean you like more tactile feel? In that case I would look for a keyboard with Cherry blue axis switches in them (e.g. Das). Me loves my Filco Majestouch Tenkeyless <3

Might want to try a Unicomp Customizer 104 or 101 (if you don't want the windows keys). Nothing beats buckling spring technology, IMHO. The Unicomps are very well made. And made in America, too! They also provide personal service. Give em a look.

Agree with Nerp. The Customizer 104 is the reincarnation of the classic IBM M keyboard. I assume a power typer is a fast touch typer?

IBM

If you can find a Model M in good condition, go for it.

Clickykeyboards is a great place to buy used and new in box, never used, original Model M boards. (New in box models can fetch upwards of $200!) I bought a used M from them and it was spotless and works great. I do prefer my Unicomp in general, though. It's hard to explain why. It might be the newness of it, but it feels a little tighter and crisper. The differences are subtle, though. I will say that the Unicomp has a more "gravelly" sound while the M I have is a little springy. You'll find differences from board to board. I know some people who have five Ms and one or two are their favorites while others end up in the closet for various reasons and never get used much.

If I find myself in a position where I'd need to buy a new buckling spring board, I think I'll just get another Unicomp and support the small company.

Take a listen to this: http://www.npr.org/templates/s....php?storyId=100076874

Click on the "listen" link. That story solidifed my desire to abandon cheap rubber dome boards and commit to replacing all my boards with buckling spring boards. It makes writing much more pleasurable and gratifying. It also leads to more accuracy due to the significantly superior key response.

You may also want to consider a board based on white alps switches. There are cherry switches that you might find satisfying as well, though some of the boards that use them are available only in Japan and require hefty importing costs or were only made for a brief period of time before being phased out. I'm not a fan of the white alps because I feel they're too noisy compared to buckling spring and they response isn't nearly as purposeful feeling. You really just need to try different switches and find out what you prefer.

As a power typer your main concerns are comfert and the feel of the keys right? The best way your going to find the right KB for you will be to get your hands on the KB first. So i reccomend you head out to your local retailer and try some out. Most retailers have a display model up for you to check out.

i googled for power typer but this thread is the second in search response... we've created a new phrase!

among those they said that I have tried are the original IBM and the Dell. I love the IBM for it's tactile feeling, which is superior to the dells. So if you like to feel the sudden drop of the key beyond the clicking point then go for a buckling spring one. But if you want something more refine, and less noisy, you will like some of the newer Alps.

DAS "Professional" http://www.daskeyboard.com/

and/or the Filco http://www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=371

I bought the DAS, because it just seemed easier to get compared to the Filco. I also have 2 IBM 1987 model "M"'s.

Good luck...

why are you recommending this version? throw in just a few more dollars and you can get the n-key rollover version you know...

Guess I didn't pay attention. I'm not a coder or a "power-typer", just a computer home-hobbyist.

The problem with this is that retailers who sell mechanical or buckling spring keyboards are few and far in between. Unless you want to just try out a crappy logitech rubber membrane board or a crappy microsoft rubber membrane board.

No, I am not saying DAS is a bad choice by any means. I have seen quite a few favorable remarks on it, and assume its a great keyboard. What I meant is, if you are going to get the filco/diatec keyboard, better off going with a product with a significant benefit at a marginal increase in cost. Again, my vote goes to the 'tenkeyless' version for space savings and portability.

You just haven't joined the alliance yet. I was like you. Then I saw the light. It will change you forever.
