power surged...I think my cd-rw drive is dead.

Well it was storming real bad down here in south florida and my power went out with the computer running. When the power kicked back on, I booted up and attempted to burn a cd (what i was about to do before my power went out). Nero stopped at 5% and the elapsed time counter kept going, but I couldn't get past 5%. There were no activity lights on the drive at all during the whole process. Even after I'd aborted the burn and closed out of nero, I couldn't eject the drive. Actually, I haven't rebooted since, and I still can't eject. I tried burning the same exact cd with my nec 2500A and it went off without a hitch. Anyone know what the problem could be and if in fact my CD-RW drive is dead?

The motor or the laser probably just burned out. I have had this happen with at least 5-6 CDROM/CD-R drives. If you got struck by lightning, believe me, you would have much more serious problems than just a CD-R drive. 😀

Little update here. Reboot didn't fix anything. However, it still can read, just not write. I did get it to write one cd but it only had 3 or 4 mp3's on it and it took about 15 minutes. Burning anything else though stays at 5 percent forever until I'm forced to abort. Also, after the power went out, when it came back on my raptor wasn't getting detected in the Via SATA Utility. I had to take out/put back in the power connector for it to be recognized. I doubt they have anything to do with each other, but both are puzzling.
