I'm helping a friend out.

He had an old surge protector that apparently didnt work. After a thunder storm everything went black.

Now when he turns on his computer it's just black. Nothing shows up. Nothing and no beeps from the mobo. Any ideas on how to fix this or what to replace? Thanks.

well first of all tell exactly what happens when your hit the power button, do the fans spin a bit?

if your friend had a bad surge protector most likely he fried the PSU. switch out the old psu for a new one and see if it powers up. Most good brands of psu's have a built in surge feature (not a strong one, but hopefully enuff to keep the surge from damaging his motherboard and other components.

if it doesn't power up then youre gonna have to take a good look at the motherboard to see if it has any burn marks. if it doesn't then he's SOL.

good luck

How do you know he's SOL when you haven't suggested testing the vid card independently or checking to see if the monitor took a hit? Maybe it isn't the computer at all...

Sorry guys.

To be more specific, his computer turns on. All the fans spin. The only thing is that the screen is all black.

We took his tower and hooked it up to three different working monitors, keyboards, and mouses. And everytime the same thing happens, a black monitor. Nothing ever comes up. It is an actual black screen with no words letters or lighting. Just pitch black. Black black black. Like a black hole. Black. heh...

He thinks it's his video card. But if just the video card is damaged, wouldn't there still be pictures and letters before windows load?
