Power Surge..Will not get past Windows Logo

1. Had power surge, even tho on surge protector, shut down, will not come back up properly.
2. When turn back on..
- says power interrupt, start normally, or if desired, do 'safe modes' start
- safe modes goes thru series of file checks, gets Windows XP logo..
- start normally goes directly to Windows XP logo..
- EITHER WAY...gets Windows XP logo, then says 'disk inconsistent'..
- does file and system check, goes to 100% complete..
- then shuts down for couple of seconds..
- turns itself back on..
- and repeats the above..start up, logo, check disk, shut down, reboots, logo, etc...
ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED..

I would try a few things:

1. Reset your BIOS. You can do this from the BIOS menu. If you don't know how to get to your BIOS menu, you can turn off and unplug your computer and remove the circular battery on the motherboard. Then replace the battery, plug in your computer, and turn it back on.

2. If #1 Does not work, try to do a repair installation of XP.

Sounds like the disk may have been damaged. I'd find the drive manufacturer's diagnostic (like IBM/Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test) and run that before messing around with anything else. At the least, it may save you some time. At best, it may prevent further damage to the disk in case your data is important enough to send the drive out for recovery.

I took the cirular battery off the motherboard. Went to the windows xp web site tryed to repair it, and tryed to reinstall. Still doing the same thing. Thank alot anyway. Any more ideals please let me know. bherres
