Power Surge damages Hardware

Hi all,

I suspect I recently just had a power surge that destroyed my PC. The motherboard is 'partly' dead... What I mean by partly dead is that the fans are not moving anymore, it seems there's no power supplied to the fans, but the heatsinks still gets hot (meaning there is power supplied to the processor) and the motherboard's LED indicator still lights up.

The hard drives' LED lights up when I boot the PC but when it comes to the BIOS detecting part, the LED went off, and the hard drives went undetected. I tried the hard drives on other PCs as well, and it seems that the hard drives are dead too.

Would appreciate if anyone knows what could have cause such severe damages and what I can do to salvage my system?

Thanks in advance,
YC

Try replacing the power supply. If that got fried, all below it fails. Can't imagine anyone running a cmputer without surge protection.

Hi Corky-g,

Thanks for the tips, I tried replacing the power supply, but it's the same results...dead fans, hot heat sinks and dead hard drives...

Yup...always invest in an AVR...

Thanks again,
YC

The fans are hooked up to the motherboard I'm assuming so it has dead fan headers at least (fans still good I'd think). Hot heatsink means the motherboard is giving power to the processor so it could be good (the processor). The hard drives don't spin up on the other system or what? Always run a good surge protector or a battery backup.

you should really run a UPS...with the spikes and surges with the current comming out of your socket that can wreak hell on your rig aswell... a UPS keeps the current even flowing even during spikes and surges

ps: im in Florida and we are known for that with crappy FPL and our lightning storms
