power supply

I need some advice on whether I should get a power supply....I am going to get a 61 gig HD along with my current configuration of a 10gig HD, 32X CD-ROM and 2x2x6 CDRW.

I have the 200W power supply that came with my Dell computer originally, do I need to upgrade to a stronger power supply? If so, to how much?

Another question is how do I know if it will work in my computer? I had tried putting an Acer ATX 300W power supply in my computer before, but some reason my computer would not boot up AT ALL with that power supply, I would smell smoke. I thought the power supply was defective, but the store gave me another power supply (same model) and the same thing still happened. And the store said that they used it on their computers and the power supply worked fine.

SO are there certain incompatibilities of power supplies and motherboards or computers? What can and should I do? Thanks for your help

ya i would probably get a new power supply nothing less than 300W
but i can't comment on why the other power supplies u tried didn't work they should just as long as it follows the atx spec (assumine that your dell follows the atx spec which i am sure it does)
give us a lil more info about ur computer specs etc
