Power Supply

I'm looking for a higher quality power supply to replace my current Aspire unit. I thought I've heard that Fortron Source is a good company. Can anyone tell me one way or another what their opinion is?

I'm thinking about this power supply: Power Supply

Thanks.

That looks like a great unit, I know many people here love Fortron and highly reccomend them. For me a cheaper Antec SP 500 watt did the trick ($50 AR) but to each his own. If you can afford it then I am willing to bet you will be very happy with that unit.

The PFC and efficiency is mediocre but other than that its a solid unit.
Check out Seasonic, Enermax for more comparisons.

The power supply I bought last time (a 500 watt Aspire unit) got very good reviews on the site selling it and cost me about $75, so I assumed it was a good unit. But my 12 volt rail reads very low (as low as 11.4) and my PC has never been stable. So I don't mind spending a bit more just to make sure I get a good unit and don't have to buy a third one.

First of all, a low +12v rail reading doesn't mean your PSU is causing whatever instability you're experiencing. But, supposing it is to blame, good luck finding any failure rates or component damage rates for a PSU--or even a PSU manufacturer. I've heard Fortron Source (FPS) are great, but who knows it that's true? And who knows if you can spend $20 and get a perfect unit somewhere?

Choosing a power supply is essentially a guessing game. There's no solid data showing one unit or one manufacturer as superior to any other. For this reason, I recommend something inexpensive.
