power supply voltage monitor

I have an ANTEC case and power supply on 2 of my 4 PCs running in my home network. All my PCs are AMD based with ASUS Mobos. One of the last machines that I built was made from parts and pieces of discarded or older hardware. The case was generic and the power supply was only a 250 watt model. As soon as I powered it up, the ASUS +12 V monitor kicked in and showed a constant voltage of about 13.53 volts. My other machines, with the ANTECs, run around 11.5 to 11.77 volts and NEVER exceed 12V. Within a week of getting that last machine running the power supply went belly up. I purchased an off the wall brand case off of eBay with a 420 Watt Power supply, put the machine back together, and as soon as I powered it up the +12 volt monitor alarm was back and showing + 13.5 volts. Am I just using crappy power supplies on this machine and am I heading for another failure, or is there something I'm missing here? Suggestions??

Try using a multimeter to check the rails. Depending on where and how the mobo's taking the measurement, the reading could be off. I'm guessing the 250W and generic 420W were flakey. Also, try firing up the machine with one of the Antec PSUs and see if it complains.

Yeah, you can't trust the readings you get. Personally, if it doesn't crash, its fine. If it starts freezing up on your or restarting itself, then you have a problem.
