i recently built a computer and it ran great with very few problems. one that puzzled me was when i let the monitor go to sleep mode sometimes it would not come back on. now my problem is that the computer will not turn the monitor on at all and it doesnt make the beep to show its booting. does anyone know whats up?

Pull the video card out and power it up.

Does it beep?

If yes, potential video card problem.

If not, pull the memory AND the video card out.

Does it beep?

If yes, potential RAM problem.

In not, potential motherboard, CPU or power supply problem.

i eliminated down to either power supply, cpu, or motherboard. from here how do i figure out which it is? im dieing without my css or bf2!

First, welcome to AT. 🙂

So how did you determine it is not the RAM or VC? When it's off and you hit the power button, do any fans spin? DO the HDD(s) spin up?

He did the troubleshooting I provided in post #2. The motherboard doesn't beep with either no RAM nor no video card which a working motherboard is going to do.

Unfortunately, without a known working PSU, motherboard or CPU it's hard to say. Double check all of the power connectors. For example: The four pin (2x2) connector provides power to the CPU. Without it, a motherboard can "power up" but it will not post. If it's loose, you can see the same result.

Also, try it again with EVERYTHING unplugged from the motherboard AND power supply. Meaning, unplug the hard drive power cable AND the IDE cable. Do this for everything so all you have is the PSU, motherboard and CPU if you haven't already. I won't have you pull the board out of the case like I normally suggest because this machine was running and isn't just a newly built build.

At this juncture, if you can get your hands on another PSU, it's the easiest thing to swap out. If it still doesn't post beep with just a PSU, motherboard and CPU, then obviosuly either the motherboard or CPU are suspect.

ok this sounds good i will try this when i get home from school today i hope it isnt my cpu i just bought it a month ago but if its my motherboard it gives me an excuse to go to sli
