Hey fellas, Looking for some advice. I was thinking of upgrading my PSU to something with more power for my rig. I just upgraded from a 4850 to a 5850 and was wondering if its worth it? Im currently running it with no issues. I Ran furmark benchmark with 4x aa and my +12v dips to 11.73. My rig is in my sig. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, that's kinda tight. Furmark is gonna push your machine harder than any game will, but you'd still be better off with a little more breathing room. Maybe sell off your 400 and get a new 500-550W.

Which one do you recommend?

The Power Supply requirement for a system with one 5850 graphic card is 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX technology in dual mode).

Therefore, here you have some quality PSUs for you:

ANTEC EarthWatts (EA 500 - EC) 500W (by Delta Electronics)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...rthwatts%20500

CORSAIR VX550 550W (by CWT)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-004-_-Product

SEASONIC S12II Bronze (SS-520GB) 520W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-094-_-Product

OCZ Fatal1ty 550W (by Sirtec) (modular)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&Tpk=ocz%20550

COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M 600W (by Enhance Electronics) (modular)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...36-_-Product"]

Considering the price, I recommend you to go for the COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M 600W.

They are decent units. The Neo Eco has been made by Seasonic while the BP550 has been made by Delta Elecronics, which are very good PSU manufacturers. Anyway I highly recommend you to pay a few more bucks and go for one of the other PSUs. They have a better quality and the price difference is not big.

For example, The COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M600 has a better voltage regulation and noise/ripple supression. It presents Japanese capacitors on primary (by Chemi-con) and quality Taiwanese caps in the secondary (by Teapo).
This power supply provides a single +12V output that is rated for up to 40A (480W) so it is able to handle your 5850 without any problem due to its two (6+2)-pin PCIe connectors.
5 years warranty.
Only 70$ for this PSU is a bargain.

Anyway, If you are thinking about doing CF, I recommend you to go for one of these ones:

ANTEC TruePower New 650W (by Seasonic) (modular)
CORSAIR TX750 750W (by CWT)
CORSAIR HX650W (by Seasonic) (modular)
ENERMAX LibertyEcoII (ELT620AWT-ECO II) 620W (modular)
ENERMAX Pro82+ II (EPR625AWT II) 625W
ENERMAX Modu82+ II (EMD625AWT II) 625W (modular)
THERMALTAKE Thoughpower XT (TPX-675M) 675W (by CWT) (modular)
SAPPHIRE FirePSU 625W (by Enermax) (modular)

Err... if you have no issues, why upgrade? Corsair generally underrates their PSUs so you might be fine there...

Ya, I would try it with what you have. You're not going to be able to sell the Corsair 400W for much of anything if you have to ship it (there running for $20 AR brand new at newegg right now).

It's not Corsair, but a very good deal out right now is the OCZ StealthXStream 600W (w/ promo code EMCYTZT27, after $25 MIR). If you're on a budget, that's the way to go IMO. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341010

No need to upgrade. Just run what you have.

Hi Jules,

This is a great deal and you will have a very cool PSU. Nothing to go wrong with and you have enough reserves for some upgrades. It's made by Seasonic and therefore very nice quality with great performance.

lol what fairytale is that please?

Hardware Secrets were able to pull 484W out of this model without any sort of failure ocurring. The only drawback, it fell to about 78% efficient, thus if they were to rate it higher, it couldn't certify as 80 PLUS. Wattage rating is totally up to the manufacturer, and not 3rd party certified. Some manufacturers PSU's have a tough time getting to their rated power in any sort of real world conditions while others will exceed it by a fair amount.

Of course if you compare to cheaper brands, but most of the high-end brands can do the trick and deliver more than expected. That's nothing magical only Corsair can do ;)

That's quite a change of heart from calling it a "fairy tale." And when did I ever say only Corsair does this?

I think you're wasting money if it's working fine.

You should also know that BFG recently pulled out of the PSU and Vid Card business so you'd be looking at no warranty pretty much.

that is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

Rated at Peak and 25C.

The CX400 is rated at continuous and 40C

At 40C the GS550 is only good for 450W continuous....and it is just overall not as good as the Seasonic platform that the CX400 is based on.

Great, thanks for the info :)

I would rule out the Antec Neo Eco 520C. It has an 80mm fan which is going to be noisy – even at slow speed. 80mm fans don’t make for quiet psu’s. (Check out Antec’s site for a proper picture of that psu, as Newegg doesn’t have the proper picture shown). I simply wouldn’t consider a psu with an 80mm fan.

The Antec BP550 Plus 550W uses a 120mm fan, which will be quiet, but this psu is a cheaper build with no 80+ efficiency rating.

I don’t see your current system using more than 350w under load, so I think your current psu is enough.

I would save up and spend a little more on a little better psu because those 2 psu’s while rated higher watts are a downgrade in quality from what you have now.

Your're right Odd.

Man, … I went to Antec's site just before posting that and I swear I saw a picture of a psu with an 80mm fan and the write-up stated it had an 80mm fan too. Perhaps it got updated or I went to the wrong page. Oh well.

120mm fan, 80 plus rating. Recommended. :)
