I'm looking to over clock my Opty 165.

i have OCZ value VX ram that requires 3.0v+ to do tight timings at decent FSB.

I was wondering if any of you could recommend a PSU that's under 100$ , runs one high end PCI-E video card , and can push my ram past 3.0v+ vdimm on a DFI ultra-D.

The PSU shouldn't affect your RAM much/at all. The motherboard will regulate the power to the RAM (correct me if i'm wrong) so assuming that you've got stable voltage rails then the limiting factor will be the motherboard, which can supply that voltage.

The Enermax range is a very nice one, but you'd be fine with the 400W model which is within your budget.

DFI recommends a MINIMUM of 480W PSU. You must also have a 8 pin connector if you get the Expert board. If you use a fdd make sure the PSU you select has at least two fdd connectors because the DFI requires one to be connected to the mobo.

The DFI also runs memory off the 3.3v line so if your 3.3v rail is bad it will affect your ram voltage. You can run vdimm off the 5v header by moving jumpers on the mobo, but unless you are running BH-5, that should not be necessary.

Just go read over on DFI -Street for a few days before you slap your rig together.

I have the Expert board + the Liberty 500W. They run together beautifully, and the Liberty does have the 8 pin connector.

DFI and other manufaucturer recomendations for PSUs often have little to no basis in reality. DFI is just gold plating it for those who buy generic PSUs that don't supply thier rated power.

QFT. What they really should stress is "quality" and also amperage on the +12v rail, but that's too difficult to communicate and so they rely on the wattage market-speak.

Come on bob. Give it up. Id go minimum of 450-500 if you are going to 7800 gt ect., overclock more than one hard drive and optical drive and fans. Always good to have more headroom than less. It will put less stress on the PSU therefore less chance of failing and less chance of losing components when it fails

robert , i see in your sig that you have an antec true power 550w,

i've heard mixed things about this PSU, mind telling me your experiences with it?

I think newegg is selling it for 90$.

btw. does any one here think the OCZ powerstream 520 is worth it's price? 140$ including tax n shipping seems like a lot to me just for a PSU

the powerstream is a good ps if ur not planning to run a heavy duty SLI system. However, it wont be very upgradeable later on if u do decide to use SLi, but many users probably will never use it. It is very pricey tho. If you were to get a similar quality PSU comparable to the OCZ powerstream, i would go with the Tagan 480W-u22 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817101516. Of course, you could always grab a $50 dollar fortron 450w psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104954, which is the best budget psu as of now. Just read reviews of the psu's that interest you. ur choice should be from a reputable brand name tho, like OCZ, Seasonic, Fortron, Antec, Enermax, Tagan (don't buy any other ePower psu), and even zalman. If there are more, I can't think of any other ones. If silence is a factor in ur purchase, check out silentpcreview.com to read some reviews too. Hope this helps a bit.

I agree with going for the Tagan 480W, I remember reading up that they were almost the same as a powerstream.

Though I would stay away from Seasonic with the Ultra-D, as many people has had problems running the S12 with it.

I don't think you can beat the Sparkle 550W for its price. It looks generic but has a single beefy 36A 12V line and the usual FSP quality. The newer SLI version was around $80 on ewiz, last I checked.

I have nothing but good things to say about it. All the voltages are very stable even under full loads.

There was problems with the orginal true power line but the version 2 ones are much better.
